The “light” reveal: Moulin Callières di Jasmin wedding
Rustic Mill in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec
Coteau-du-Lac is a small city about a 30 minute drive outside of Montreal, located by Lake Saint Francis. It’s a picturesque and sleepy little area, but the Mill is a great choice for those looking for a quiet but lovely and natural spot for their wedding.
The Mill itself was built in the 18th century, and full of history. So if stone walls and lots of nooks and crannies is your thing, consider this wedding venue that’s close to Montreal. The Mill has been offered as a wedding venue since 1995, so they are quite organized when it comes to supporting your wedding day needs.
Would Moulin Callières di Jasmin be a good fit for your wedding? This venue is ideal for couples who:
Seek an historic venue with lots of character
Would enjoy a wedding ceremony right at the water’s edge on a unique rock terrasse
Want an intimate feel for their wedding day
If you’re looking for a similar Montreal wedding venue, in the same Monteregie area but a little less historic and natural, you can consider the Auberge des Gallant in Ste. Marthe. Click here to see a wedding at the Auberge.
Coteau-du-lac National historic site
Just a short walk down the road from this wedding venue is the National Historic Site, which is the site of North America’s first lock canal system and has fort ruins, complete with canons pointed out towards the river. It is a big green space and the fort remains can make interesting textural details for photos. You can photograph with the lake in the background, with open space or with a tree-lined background, making these grounds quite versatile for wedding photography. With several embankments, the angles and perspectives are fun and visually interesting.
The “light” reveal
In the spirit of my eternal duality, a light reveal has a double meaning:
To feature select photographs from the wedding
To comment on the light and other elements to be considered when planning your wedding photography at this venue
This Montreal wedding was less than a hundred people, perfect for a relaxed and intimate space like the Mill.
The flat, rock shore on the Mill property where ceremonies take place really makes you understand the term “Canadian Shield,” as it has a wild and rugged feel to it. Right on the lake, it gave me a feeling that I could have been elsewhere in Canada, like an elopement out West minus the mountain views!
The Mill boasts a very large terrasse, overlooking the water and perfect for cocktails. It’s covered as well, so available rain or shine. The coordinator told me that when guests are invited to be seated inside, she invites the bride & groom to take a moment alone on the terrasse, before they are introduced. I thought it was a lovely sentiment, and after photographing the reception room, I went out and found my couple sitting peacefully and holding hands, chatting and looking out over the water. It was the calmest pre-introduction to any wedding I’ve ever experienced, and I think it was a slice of heaven for them to take this moment to themselves before the celebrations got underway.
For a spot that’s tucked away and perhaps not well known to Montrealers, it was a pleasure to discover how they have everything in hand when it comes to weddings. The onsite coordinator Hélène knows the place like the back of her hand, and she was on top of everything - even curling the bride’s hair after our portraits but before the ceremony! She helped grandpa with his boutonniere before the first look with his granddaughter, and she sent everyone down the aisle at perfect pace.
Everything ran so smoothly and the food was spectacular! I enjoyed my meal and they were also very conscientious about the fact that I have a fresh pepper allergy (I know, it’s weird!!) to ensure my meal was safe and satisfactory!
Watch for the full reveal of this lakeside wedding!
Here’s to joy,
Lucy
