Lucy Baum Family Photography: 8 Tips for Planning an Outdoor Family Photoshoot in Montreal

Back to Journal

We live in a beautiful city. Embracing the natural beauty of Montreal's parks, gardens, and even urban landscapes, my goal is to capture the unique spirit of your family in a setting that has features you love, or that is meaningful.

With a climate in Montreal that has four seasons (that we might have a love/ hate relationship with!), you can opt for vibrant colours of Fall, a Winter wonderland photoshoot, a blooming springtime gathering or a Summer joy day. There are endless possibilities, from the industrial chic of the Lachine Canal, to the natural settings at Parc Jean Drapeau, to the eclectic and character-filled streets, shops and waterfront at the Old Port of Montreal. I have photographed in many areas of Montreal, West Island and out of the city and based on your aesthetic and preferences, always happy to make some location recommendations.

When families decide to have an outdoor photoshoot, preparing for the session is a vital part of ensuring memorable and classic photographs. Here are some essential steps that I go through with all of my clients:

1. Choosing the Season & Location

Selecting the outdoor location sets the tone for the photoshoot. As mentioned in the opening paragraph, season matters for location! Families may choose a place that holds significance to them (like a nearby park where they took the kids when they were younger) or opt for a scenic spot that complements their style and personality. 2. Coordinating Outfits

Coordinating outfits can enhance the overall look of the family portraits. Families often choose colors that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. It's a good idea to consider the location backdrop when selecting outfits. If weather is on the cooler side, sweaters, light jackets, and scarves can help each family member customize a look they love and feel good with. See more of this session here.

3. Timing the Session

Especially for outdoor Montreal family photoshoots, golden hour shortly before sunset is a favourite time, when the light is soft and flattering. But I will say that golden hour doesn’t work for everyone. Work or other family obligations, children’s sports or activities or nap times can make it a difficult time of day. Rest assured, a photo session at any time of day can have beautiful results.

4. Preparing Props (if any)

Some families like to bring props to add a personal touch to their photoshoot. Whether it's blankets, signs, or items representing a shared hobby, props can make the session more fun and unique. This family had everyone looking cool in their shades! See more of this session here.

5. Communicating with the Photographer

Clear communication with the photographer is essential and I make it easy by leading you through the process from initial inquiry to delivery of your final order and beyond. I also follow up with reminders, because I know that you are a busy family! Families often discuss their vision, any specific poses or groupings they have in mind, and any must-have photos they want to capture during the session. It’s important to me that you feel cared for and confident with your photo session as that makes for wonderful energy in photographs. The family in the above photograph were from Australia and in Montreal on a work contract. Their little girl had never experienced snow and the family was hoping to find time to go outdoors after the main purpose of the session; celebrating baby #2. While we finished up with baby brother, it started snowing large, soft flakes, so we all donned our winter wear and headed to the backyard for some snowy fun! See more of this session here.

6. Ensuring Comfort

Depending on the location and weather, families prepare by bringing essentials like water, snacks, and touch-up makeup for quick fixes. I send out a link prior to your session with tips for comfort and style. This can be especially tricky for kids, since they will certainly tell you if they are uncomfortable in your clothing choices for them! Ensuring everyone is comfortable and relaxed leads to more natural photographs that help your real selves shine through. Not to mention, snacks and toddlers can make for unpredictable but wonderful photo memories. Most parents can relate to the this photo, as Cheerios are such a staple in any parent’s snack bag!

7. Involving Pets

If pets are part of the family photoshoot, additional preparations may be needed. Bringing along their favourite toys or treats can help keep them engaged and happy during the session. If you have a handful with your pet or more than one, bringing a handler allows you to remain stress-free!

8. Final Touches

On the day of the photoshoot, families may do some final touch-ups before the session begins. Quick outfit checks, hair adjustments, and some encouraging words to each other can set a positive tone for the shoot. Since sessions with me are fluid and relaxed, breaks are normal for snacks, hair fixes, and a few sips of water to rehydrate and re-energize.

By taking these steps to prepare for your Montreal family outdoor photoshoot, you can create a relaxed and enjoyable experience that results in beautiful photographs. Working together, we will co-create your visual history for your family to revisit on rainy days, or anytime just because.
